The Ghana Medical Association has called for fairness, transparency, and due process in handling disciplinary actions arising from the investigative report into the death of Charles Amissah.

In a statement issued on May 7, the Association acknowledged the release of the report by the ministerial committee established to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to the GMA, the report exposed major systemic challenges within Ghana’s healthcare system, particularly in emergency care delivery. The Association noted that the findings highlighted long-standing gaps that require urgent reforms and sustained investment.

The GMA stressed that improving emergency healthcare requires long-term commitment to areas such as referral systems, staffing, equipment, and accountability structures rather than temporary solutions.

While recognising that the report recommended disciplinary action against some doctors who were on duty during the incident, the Association expressed concern over the publication of the names of the affected health workers.

According to the statement, public attention has shifted away from the broader systemic failures identified in the report and instead focused on criticism and attacks directed at the named individuals.

The Association reaffirmed its support for accountability and high professional standards but insisted that any disciplinary action must follow established procedures and be evidence-based, transparent, and fair.

The GMA also announced plans to obtain an official copy of the report to thoroughly review its findings and recommendations before determining its next course of action.

In the meantime, the Association assured members that it would provide support to any doctor facing disciplinary proceedings connected to the matter, in line with its mandate to protect the welfare and professional integrity of its members.

The GMA further advised members to remain calm and avoid public comments or speculation that could affect ongoing processes or damage the reputations of colleagues involved.

The Association added that it would continue engaging relevant authorities and affected members while keeping the wider membership informed on developments related to the case.
