Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has confirmed the successful evacuation of the first group of Ghanaian nationals from Iran to Turkey. This operation is part of the Mahama administration’s broader emergency response to rising instability in the Middle East.
In a Facebook post on Friday, June 20, Ablakwa shared that preparations are also in motion to evacuate Ghanaian citizens currently residing in Israel. He revealed that earlier this week, he engaged in strategic discussions with the ambassadors of both Iran and Israel to outline Ghana’s evacuation blueprint, aimed at securing safe passage and border clearances for affected citizens.
“These engagements not only enhanced diplomatic coordination but also deepened our insights into the unfolding crisis,” Ablakwa noted.
He also addressed concerns raised by the Israeli Ambassador regarding Ghana’s voting patterns at international platforms. In response, Ablakwa defended Ghana’s sovereign right to make foreign policy decisions aligned with its national interests and constitutional principles.
“I emphasized that Ghana’s choices are rooted in our long-standing foreign policy values — including non-alignment, peace-building, adherence to international law, and multilateral diplomacy,” he stated.
Ablakwa concluded with a renewed plea for an immediate ceasefire and a peaceful diplomatic resolution to the ongoing hostilities in the region.
