Minority Presses Government to Reveal Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s Detention Location

Minority MPs are demanding greater transparency over the detention of former MASLOC CEO Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu following her extradition and imprisonment in Ghana.

Story Highlights
  • Minority demands disclosure of Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu’s prison location.
  • Isaac Boamah-Nyarko describes government communication as inadequate.
  • MPs say transparency will help end public speculation.

The Minority in Parliament is calling on the government to disclose the specific prison facility where former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, is being held following her extradition to Ghana.

The demand comes after the Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, stated that Madam Tamakloe-Attionu is currently in prison custody and serving her sentence under the supervision of the Ghana Prisons Service.

Her return to Ghana follows a prolonged extradition process that began after she failed to return to the country following a medical trip to the United States.

Reacting to the government’s statement, the Member of Parliament for Effia, Isaac Boamah-Nyarko, described the information provided as insufficient and lacking the transparency expected in a democratic system.

According to him, the public deserves a full account of the circumstances surrounding her arrival in Ghana, including where she was received, the facility to which she was transferred, and whether she has officially begun serving her sentence.

“Government communication on Sedina is very terse. In an accountable democracy, one expects the government to provide full details regarding where she was received, where she has been sent, who received her, and whether she is serving the full sentence handed down by a court of competent jurisdiction,” he said.

Mr. Boamah-Nyarko argued that merely stating that the former MASLOC CEO is in prison custody does not adequately address public concerns.

“It is not enough for a government spokesperson to simply say she is in prison custody. A person can be under the care of the Prisons Service while being housed elsewhere, including at a private residence or in a hospital,” he stated.

The Effia MP stressed that the Minority is seeking clear and definitive information regarding Madam Tamakloe-Attionu’s current status.

“We want definitive information from the Minister for Government Communications. What exactly is the status of Sedina following her arrival in Ghana and her placement in prison custody?” he questioned.

He added that greater transparency would help eliminate speculation and reassure the public that the court’s ruling is being fully enforced.

“If the government provides the exact details, Ghanaians will be able to appreciate that she is serving the full term of her conviction. Had all the necessary information been provided from the outset, there would be no room for speculation,” he said.

Mr. Boamah-Nyarko further questioned why authorities had not been more forthcoming about her detention arrangements since her extradition.

“If she has indeed been taken to a prison facility, why is the government withholding that information? We expect the government to be candid with the people and provide full details about her whereabouts,” he added.

He noted that the case has attracted considerable public attention and emphasized the importance of applying the law consistently, regardless of political affiliation.

“We expect the government to come out clearly on this matter. We are dissatisfied with the information released so far and expect the relevant ministry to do the needful,” he concluded.
