Mexico national football team began their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign on a winning note, defeating South Africa national football team 2-0 in a dramatic opening match that produced three red cards.

Mexico dominated much of the contest, with forward Julián Quiñones making history by scoring the first goal of the tournament. The striker was one of Mexico’s standout performers and came close to adding a second before halftime.

South Africa’s challenge suffered a major setback early in the second half when Yaya Sithole was sent off for bringing down Brian Gutiérrez.

Mexico capitalized on their numerical advantage, with veteran striker Raúl Jiménez doubling the lead to put the result beyond doubt.

The match became increasingly heated as South Africa’s Themba Zwane was shown a red card for violent conduct, reducing his side to nine men.

Mexico also finished the game with 10 players after defender César Montes was dismissed in stoppage time for a reckless challenge.

The victory extends Mexico’s impressive record in World Cup opening matches. The team is now unbeaten in its last eight tournament openers, recording six wins and two draws since a 1-0 defeat to Norway in its opening match of the 1994 World Cup.

Mexico will look to build on the positive start as the tournament progresses, while South Africa will seek to bounce back from a disappointing and ill-disciplined performance.
