Alejandro Garnacho endured a disappointing night as Chelsea fell 1-0 to his former club Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, a result that boosted United’s push for Champions League qualification.
The 21-year-old Argentine winger struggled to make an impact against his former side, losing possession 15 times and recording a low expected assists (xA) of just 0.06. His performance drew criticism from Chelsea supporters, while Manchester United fans also reacted sharply to his display.
Matheus Cunha’s 43rd-minute strike proved decisive for the Red Devils, but attention after the final whistle shifted to Garnacho’s interaction—or lack thereof—with his former teammates.
Footage from the stands showed Manchester United players appearing to ignore Garnacho as they made their way off the pitch and into the Stamford Bridge tunnel. Several players, including Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, Casemiro, Bryan Mbeumo, Ayden Heaven, Noussair Mazraoui, and Diogo Dalot, were seen walking past him without any visible acknowledgment.
The moment sparked debate among fans online, with some suggesting the Argentine winger was being deliberately snubbed due to the manner of his exit from Old Trafford.
One supporter commented that none of the United players stopped to greet him, describing the reaction as a sign he is now viewed as a “betrayer.” Another noted the “cold” treatment, pointing out that not a single handshake was offered despite Garnacho’s ambitions of playing Champions League football.
Garnacho’s departure from Manchester United in 2025 was widely reported to have been tense, with earlier reports suggesting friction under former manager Ruben Amorim and concerns from senior players about his attitude and decision-making on the pitch.
Despite being regarded as one of United’s brightest young talents, his relationship with the club reportedly deteriorated before his £40 million move to Chelsea.
Since joining the Blues, Garnacho has shown flashes of promise but has struggled for consistency. He has scored just one Premier League goal in 22 appearances, adding four assists, while recording eight goals and four assists in 39 appearances across all competitions.
Chelsea fans will now be hoping for a stronger second season from the Argentine as he looks to establish himself in the Premier League.
