Kumasi Faces Three Months of Planned Power Outages as GRIDCo Upgrades Network

Three-month rehabilitation project aims to triple power transmission capacity and improve electricity reliability.

Story Highlights
  • Kumasi and parts of Ashanti Region will experience planned power outages for three months
  • GRIDCo is replacing over 30-year-old transmission lines and towers
  • Project will increase transmission capacity from 364MW to about 1,000MW

Residents of Kumasi and parts of the Ashanti Region should expect temporary and planned power outages over the next three months as the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) undertakes a major upgrade of its ageing transmission infrastructure.

The announcement was made by the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, during an inspection of ongoing works at the Anwomaso Bulk Supply Point alongside GRIDCo officials.

According to the Minister, the project involves replacing transmission lines and towers that have been in operation for more than 30 years and can no longer efficiently handle the growing electricity demand in Kumasi and surrounding communities.

He explained that the rehabilitation will increase power transmission capacity from 364 megawatts (MW) to approximately 1,000 megawatts (MW), significantly improving the stability and reliability of electricity supply once the project is completed.

Mr. Jinapor said the planned power interruptions are necessary to ensure the safety of engineers and technicians working on the transmission lines during the rehabilitation exercise.

He appealed to residents and businesses to cooperate with GRIDCo, stressing that the temporary inconvenience will lead to a stronger and more dependable power supply in the long term.

The Minister warned that delaying the replacement of the ageing infrastructure could expose Kumasi to more frequent power supply challenges in the future.

GRIDCo Chief Executive, Ing. Frank Otchere, described the project as essential to securing reliable electricity supply in the Ashanti Region, noting that the existing transmission towers have reached the end of their operational lifespan.

He assured the public that GRIDCo will provide regular updates, including schedules of planned power interruptions, to help consumers prepare throughout the three-month project.
