A former Zambian minister was killed last week during a police raid on a residence linked to opposition leader Brian Mundubile, the authorities have confirmed. The incident occurred a day after Zambia’s presidential election.
A police spokesperson stated that Mutotwe Kafwaya was fatally shot by security forces during an exchange of gunfire in Lusaka on Friday. The raid resulted in the arrest of eleven individuals, with authorities accusing Mundubile’s party, the NRPUP, of involvement in insurgency, militia activity, and possession of high-grade weapons.

Mundubile, who has since gone into hiding, dismissed the allegations as “total fabrications.”
Official election results showed incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema winning a second term with approximately 60% of the vote. Mundubile, who received 38%, plans to challenge the election results in court, alleging irregularities in the tallying process.
Regarding Kafwaya, opposition leader Mundubile said he had no information about his whereabouts after the supposed shooting at his house during the raid.
The police confirmed Kafwaya’s death late on Wednesday, amid rising public demand for more details about the incident.
