President John Dramani Mahama has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the petitions for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, breaking his silence on the matter for the first time.
Speaking at a Council of State meeting on Monday, July 7, 2025, President Mahama described the situation as one of the more challenging issues his administration has faced within its first six months.
Justice Torkornoo was suspended following the Council’s establishment of a prima facie case, prompting the formation of a five-member investigative committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang.
“This matter has not been easy,” Mahama admitted. “The Council of State played its part, and now we await the findings of the committee that is currently reviewing the petitions.”
He emphasized that the final decision regarding Justice Torkornoo’s position will depend on the committee’s report. “Whatever consequences emerge from their conclusions will be handled accordingly,” the president added.
