Bruno Fernandes matched the Premier League single-season assist record as Manchester United secured an entertaining 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Fernandes provided his 20th assist of the league season when his cross from the right was converted by Bryan Mbeumo to restore United’s two-goal advantage. The milestone puts the United captain level with Premier League legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne for the most assists recorded in a single campaign.

The victory also ensured United secured third place under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is still awaiting official confirmation as the club’s permanent manager.

United took an early lead through Luke Shaw in the fifth minute, but Forest responded with an equaliser from defender Morato.

The game’s most controversial moment came shortly after Forest levelled. Mbeumo appeared to control the ball with his upper arm before his effort deflected into the path of Matheus Cunha, who finished first time to restore United’s lead.

Referee Michael Salisbury initially awarded the goal and, despite being asked by VAR official Matthew Donohue to review the incident, upheld his decision after a lengthy check. The officials ruled that the ball had deflected off Mbeumo’s hip rather than his arm, prompting loud boos from supporters frustrated by the delay.

Forest pushed back late in the match and reduced the deficit when Morgan Gibbs-White scored with 12 minutes remaining. However, the visitors could not find a late equaliser.

The match also marked an emotional farewell appearance for Casemiro, who received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd when he was substituted nine minutes from time.
