  • Calls on Ghanaians to support local produce

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, has strongly rejected claims that locally produced maize is unsuitable for poultry feed, describing such assertions as “blatant lies.”

Speaking during an engagement with farmers and traders in Atebubu-Amantin, the lawmaker accused some government officials—whom he alleged are also involved in import businesses—of deliberately spreading misinformation.

According to him, such claims are intended to justify the importation of cheaper maize from Brazil, a move he believes is undermining local farmers and weakening Ghana’s agricultural sector.

Mr. Annoh-Dompreh maintained that Ghanaian maize remains a dependable and nutritious option for poultry production, warning that such narratives could erode public confidence in locally grown crops.

Beyond maize, he also used the platform to promote locally produced rice, highlighting its nutritional value. He explained that, unlike highly polished imported varieties, Ghanaian rice retains its natural fiber—often referred to as “roughage”—which enhances its health benefits.

He urged Ghanaians to prioritise locally produced food, stressing that doing so would not only improve nutrition but also support farmers’ livelihoods and strengthen the national economy.

His comments reflect growing concerns among stakeholders over increasing reliance on imported food commodities, at a time when local farmers continue to struggle to market and sell their produce.
