Oppong Nkrumah Lists 4 Key Blunders Behind NPP’s 2024 Election Loss

NPP MP highlights economic woes, governance lapses, and exclusion as core reasons for party’s electoral defeat in 2024.

Story Highlights
  • Oppong Nkrumah says poor economic management was the top voter concern
  • Party suffered from weak internal governance and operational confusion
  • Many felt excluded from key decisions, hurting party unity and performance

Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Ofoase-Ayirebi MP and member of the NPP’s Constitutional and Legal Committee, has identified four major reasons behind the New Patriotic Party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking in an interview, Oppong Nkrumah referenced findings from the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee, which was formed to evaluate the party’s electoral performance.

He said the committee’s report pointed to:

  1. Economic hardships that voters felt were not adequately addressed.

  2. Weak party corporate governance, leading to breakdowns in grassroots operations.

  3. Internal operational conflicts over roles and responsibilities.

  4. Perceptions of exclusion, where key stakeholders felt sidelined in decision-making processes.

“These were the dominant themes in our feedback,” he said. “The economy was a huge factor, but issues of governance and inclusion also weighed heavily.”

Oppong Nkrumah added that the NPP has begun implementing recommendations from the report, citing the recent National Delegates Conference as a step toward internal reform and unity.

The conference, held on July 19 at the University of Ghana Stadium, aimed to regroup the party and strategize for the future.
