Berekum Chelsea have confirmed that they will continue participating in the Ghana Premier League despite the traumatic armed robbery attack on the team, following their Matchday 29 fixture against FC Samartex at DUN’s Park.
A member of the club’s communications team, Albert Diewuo, said the players and technical staff are currently receiving psychological support after the incident, which claimed the life of striker Dominic Frimpong, who died from a gunshot wound to the head.
Speaking on the Ultimate Sports Show on Asempa FM, he stressed that the club has no intention of withdrawing from the league. Instead, they will rely on professional counselling to help the squad recover from the emotional trauma and prepare for upcoming matches.
Diewuo acknowledged the mental toll on the team but insisted they remain committed to completing the season.
He also highlighted concerns about travel security, explaining that the club’s use of police escorts is inconsistent, depending on availability. In this case, he noted that the team travelled without security protection after failing to secure an escort.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Football Association is expected to engage stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for club movements to prevent similar tragedies in future competitions.
