- Ghana has recorded no cases so far, but authorities are urging vigilance and preventive measures
The Ghana Health Service has intensified monitoring and surveillance activities at the country’s ports of entry following confirmed Hantavirus cases linked to passengers aboard a cruise ship that recently docked in Cape Verde.

The heightened precaution follows reports of five confirmed infections and three deaths connected to the outbreak on the vessel.
Although Ghana has not recorded any case of the virus, health authorities say proactive measures are already underway to prevent a possible outbreak and ensure early detection of any suspected infections.

Speaking in an interview, the Director of Public Health at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, disclosed that emergency response systems have been activated nationwide as part of Ghana’s preparedness strategy.
“We have activated our emergency system to make sure we are aware of it. Should there be any suspected cases, if possible, we will send samples to our lab. Currently, Noguchi is capable, as well as KCCR,” he explained.
Dr. Asiedu-Bekoe further noted that designated treatment centres have been identified and equipped to manage any potential cases if necessary.

He added that public education and risk communication campaigns are also being intensified to raise awareness about preventive measures and reduce the risk of transmission.
The Ghana Health Service has urged the public to remain calm but vigilant, assuring that authorities are closely monitoring the situation while strengthening nationwide surveillance and response systems.
