The Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Odeneho Kwaku Appiah, has called on journalists and media practitioners in the region to refrain from engaging in politics of insults.
According to him, the growing trend of insults, personal attacks and use of intemperate language in political discussions only breeds hatred, division and animosity, which does not augur well for Ghana’s democratic dispensation.
Speaking at a well-attended press soirée organized for journalists in Kumasi on Saturday night, Chairman Appiah, popularly known as COKA, stated unequivocally that his administration will not entertain any form of politics that seeks to tear people down.
“Exhibiting politics of insults only results in hatred. As a party that believes in development and ideas, we should vehemently avoid it,” COKA stressed.
He noted that the media plays a critical role in shaping public opinion and setting the tone for political discourse, and therefore urged practitioners to uphold professionalism, fairness and respect in their work.
COKA further advised radio and television producers, as well as content developers, to always consult the Regional Communications Directorate when empaneling discussants for political programs. He explained that this will ensure that topics are properly coordinated, accurate information is shared, and party communicators assigned are well-informed on subject matters.
The press soirée, which brought together a cross-section of journalists from various media houses in the Ashanti Region, was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the party and the media, and fostering mutual understanding.
He reiterated his commitment to running an open-door administration that values constructive criticism and collaboration with the media for the development of the region and the party at large.
