Former Attorney-General Godfred Yeboah Dame has raised concerns about what he describes as troubling conduct within Ghana’s judiciary, warning that it could undermine public confidence in the justice system.

Speaking at the Leadership and Law Series organised by the Law Students Network on April 19, 2026, Mr Dame alleged that some judicial decisions appear to disproportionately affect members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He pointed to recent cases involving the detention and denial of bail to certain individuals linked to the party, arguing that such outcomes raise questions about the independence and neutrality of the courts.

“Some members of the judiciary have, regrettably, become willing enablers of these violations through unjustified detentions of political opponents,” he stated.

Mr Dame also criticised what he described as efforts to suppress free expression, citing arrests connected to public commentary on national issues.

According to him, the denial of bail and what he termed “frivolous prosecutions” of individuals expressing views on matters of public interest risk damaging the credibility of the judiciary.

He further referenced arrests linked to commentary on LGBTQ issues, describing them as an “absurd effort” to silence dissenting voices.

Mr Dame warned that if such developments persist, they could erode trust in Ghana’s justice system and weaken democratic principles.
