A commemorative gold coin minted in honour of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has been presented to several distinguished individuals in recognition of their contributions and connection to his legacy.

The coin, launched in 2021, was awarded to Otumfuo himself, as well as prominent Ghanaian leaders including Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, John Agyekum Kufuor, and John Dramani Mahama.

Receiving the honour, Otumfuo expressed humility, stating that the recognition belongs not only to him but also to Asanteman and the entire nation.

President Akufo-Addo described the gesture as a fitting tribute to the Asantehene, praising his instrumental role in helping to restore lasting peace in Dagbon during his administration.

Former President Kufuor also commended Otumfuo’s leadership, noting that his efforts in resolving the Dagbon conflict could have earned him global recognition, including a Nobel Peace Prize, if they had occurred elsewhere. He further credited the King with contributing to Ghana’s exit from the HIPC initiative, which led to significant debt relief.

Former President Mahama highlighted Otumfuo’s influence on Ghana’s economic and political landscape, pointing to his role in securing the country’s 2016 IMF programme, which helped stabilise the economy.

Mahama also described the Asantehene as a key figure in Ghana’s democratic development since the era of Jerry John Rawlings, noting that he has consistently offered wise counsel during critical moments in the nation’s history.
