GPRTU: No Immediate Increase in Transport Fares

Unions to monitor fuel price trends before any adjustment

Story Highlights
  • Transport fares remain unchanged for now
  • Decision follows stakeholder meeting on March 16
  • Fuel prices alone do not determine fare adjustments

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union has assured commuters that transport fares will remain unchanged for now as stakeholders continue to assess movements in fuel prices.

The assurance comes amid public concerns that recent hikes in fuel prices could lead to an increase in transport fares nationwide.

Speaking in an intwerview, Deputy Public Relations Officer of the union, Samuel Amoah, explained that fare adjustments are not based solely on fuel prices but also take into account other operational costs such as spare parts, lubricants, and taxes.

He revealed that a meeting held on Monday, March 16, involving the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council and the Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana, agreed to maintain current fares for the time being.

According to him, a technical team has been tasked with monitoring market conditions and advising on the appropriate time for any fare review.

“We have decided not to rush into any decision for now. We will wait and observe developments in the next fuel pricing window before taking any action,” he stated.

Amoah added that the unions want to avoid frequent fare changes, noting that premature increases could create challenges if fuel prices shift again.

He said a final decision on whether to increase, reduce, or maintain fares will be made after the next pricing window is assessed.
