Story Highlights
  • Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti identified as top regions for exam malpractice
  • Central Region shows a recent surge in cheating and irregularities
  • WAEC implements serialized papers, monitoring, and urges public cooperation

The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revealed that the Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti Regions remain the primary hotspots for examination malpractices in Ghana.

John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, noted that these regions have consistently reported high cases of cheating, impersonation, and circulation of leaked exam papers over the past two years. He also flagged a recent surge in irregularities in the Central Region.

In an interview on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, Mr. Kapi said: “The hotspots in the country are Bono, Bono East, Ahafo, and Ashanti. While other regions may occasionally show higher numbers, the trend in these areas remains concerning. The Central Region, however, has started to record rising cases in recent times.”

WAEC is collaborating with security agencies and education authorities to curb the growing menace. The Council clarified recent claims about withheld results, stating that no official figures have been released, and that ongoing investigations into the 2024 WASSCE irregularities will determine the extent of malpractices.

To protect the integrity of its exams, WAEC has introduced serialized question papers, strengthened monitoring systems, and enhanced real-time communication with supervisors. Students, teachers, and parents have also been urged to avoid engaging in or facilitating exam fraud.
