The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has confirmed the arrest of 43 teachers over their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the recently concluded Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, John Kapi, said all those arrested so far are teachers.

According to him, no students have been arrested in relation to the reported malpractice cases.

“Students are usually not arrested. Their statements are taken and forwarded to the office for investigations before any final decision is made concerning them,” Mr Kapi explained.

The arrests are part of WAEC’s broader efforts to combat examination malpractice and protect the credibility of public examinations in the country.

Mr Kapi also assured parents, candidates and other stakeholders that preparations for the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) are on track.

He disclosed that the English oral examination is scheduled for Wednesday, May 13, while some practical examinations and subjects such as cost accounting have already been conducted successfully.

According to him, WAEC initially focused heavily on the BECE because of the large number of candidates and the overlap with WASSCE preparations.

“Due to the numbers involved, especially with the BECE happening alongside WASSCE preparations, we gave priority attention to the BECE. This week, the oral English paper will begin, and activities will gradually move into full operation,” he stated.

WAEC has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a smooth and credible conduct of the WASSCE while intensifying monitoring measures to curb examination irregularities.
