Jose Mourinho is reportedly in advanced talks to become the next head coach of Real Madrid, potentially marking a dramatic return to the Spanish giants 13 years after his first spell at the club.
The 63-year-old Portuguese manager has emerged as the leading candidate for the position and is currently the only coach in active negotiations with the club.
If the deal is completed, Mourinho will replace current manager Alvaro Arbeloa, who assumed the role in January following the departure of Xabi Alonso.
Reports indicate that Real Madrid president Florentino Perez began exploring the possibility of Mourinho’s return shortly after Alonso left, opening discussions with the coach’s representatives.
Mourinho is currently in charge of Benfica in Portugal, having signed a two-year contract with the club in September last year.
Speaking recently about speculation surrounding his future, Mourinho declined to comment in detail, insisting his focus remains on Benfica’s final match of the season against Estoril Praia.
“There’s a match against Estoril, and from Monday onwards I’ll be able to answer questions about my future as a coach and Benfica’s future,” he said.
Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, during which he guided the club to several trophies, including the La Liga title, the Copa del Rey and the Spanish Super Cup.
