New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman hopeful Paul Afoko has intensified his nationwide consultations with influential figures in the party as part of efforts to reposition the NPP for victory in the 2028 general elections.

Mr Afoko has begun a second round of high-level engagements with key party stalwarts, including former Vice President and 2024 presidential candidate Mahamudu Bawumia, former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and former Assin Central MP Kennedy Ohene Agyapong.

Before the NPP presidential primaries held on January 31, 2026, Mr Afoko had already met all five flagbearer aspirants, including Bryan Acheampong, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and Yaw Osei Adutwum, in what insiders described as efforts to foster unity within the party.

Sources close to the former NPP National Chairman say the latest stakeholder engagements form part of a broader consultation strategy ahead of the party’s upcoming National Delegates Conference.

Mr Afoko, who served as NPP National Chairman between 2014 and 2015, is campaigning on a “3R Agenda” — Reunite, Rebuild and Recapture — aimed at restoring the party to power in 2028.

According to his camp, the meetings are intended to tap into the experience of senior party leaders, address internal concerns and build consensus following the NPP’s defeat in the 2024 general election.

“You cannot rebuild a house by ignoring the architects,” a member of his team reportedly stated, stressing the importance of engaging leaders who have shaped the party’s history.

The discussions with Dr Bawumia and former President Akufo-Addo are said to carry significant political weight due to their influence within the party, while the engagement with former President Kufuor is viewed as an attempt to strengthen party unity and preserve institutional memory.

Sources also indicate that Mr Afoko used the meetings to caution against internal divisions and blame games while urging party members to prioritise competence over ethnicity in choosing the next National Chairman.

The consultations follow earlier meetings with the Ashanti Regional Council of Elders and regional executives in Kumasi.

Since declaring his intention to contest the chairmanship position, Mr Afoko has embarked on an extensive nationwide outreach campaign to engage party stakeholders, grassroots members and opinion leaders.

Party insiders believe the latest engagements suggest he is actively “mending fences and testing the waters” ahead of the internal contest.
