U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticised Pope Leo XIV, describing him as “weak on crime” and “terrible for foreign policy” in a strongly worded post shared on his social media platform, X.

In the post, Trump accused the pontiff of showing “fear” toward his administration, while also claiming the Pope ignored what he described as fear experienced by the Catholic Church during the COVID-19 pandemic, when religious leaders were allegedly restricted from holding services.

Trump further questioned the Pope’s stance on global security issues, particularly nuclear weapons and U.S. foreign policy, suggesting disagreement with the administration’s approach to international affairs.

“I don’t want a Pope who thinks it’s OK for Iran to have a Nuclear Weapon,” he wrote, also accusing Pope Leo XIV of leaning toward political bias and “catering to the Radical Left.”

He went on to criticise the circumstances of the Pope’s selection, calling his appointment “a shocking surprise” and implying it may have been influenced by political factors.

Trump also said he would have preferred the Pope’s brother, Louis, whom he described as strongly aligned with his “MAGA” movement.

The remarks, posted on Trump’s official account, add to ongoing controversy surrounding his public criticism of religious and political figures, drawing widespread attention online.
