Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu will seek a second and final four-year term in January after securing a decisive victory in the ruling party’s presidential primary, according to results released on Sunday.

The governing All Progressives Congress (APC) held its primaries on Saturday, where Tinubu faced a surprise challenge from little-known contender Stanley Osifo.

However, the president won overwhelmingly, reportedly securing nearly 11 million votes compared to just 16,500 for Osifo.

Tinubu has been praised by foreign investors for implementing major economic reforms, including the removal of fuel and electricity subsidies, the ending of foreign exchange controls, and an overhaul of Nigeria’s tax system.

His prospects for re-election were further strengthened after an opposition plan to present a unified candidate against him collapsed earlier this month.

Tinubu assumed office in 2023 after defeating his main rivals in a contested election, which opponents challenged in court, alleging irregularities. He, however, maintained that the election was conducted fairly.
