Doctors in Sri Lanka have removed a giant bladder stone weighing 3.1kg (6.8lb) from a 55-year-old man, which they believe could be the largest bladder stone ever recorded.

The surgery was performed last week at Trincomalee General Hospital in eastern Sri Lanka.

The patient had been admitted after suffering a stroke. During his treatment, doctors discovered that he was experiencing difficulty urinating and found stones in his bladder.

Surgeons subsequently removed the unusually large stone, which weighed approximately the same as a full-term newborn and was reportedly about the size of an ostrich egg.

Dr Prahalahan Balakrishnan, who led the surgery, told BBC Sinhala that available records suggest the stone is the largest bladder stone ever documented and surgically removed.
