TikToker Camilla Alhassan has been sentenced to one year in prison by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to offensive conduct and the publication of false news.

The sentence was handed down on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after Camilla admitted to circulating videos that falsely claimed, without evidence, that President John Dramani Mahama buried 32 cows as part of rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general election.

The widely shared videos triggered her arrest and subsequent prosecution by the Ghana Police Service.

Speaking after the court’s decision, her lawyer, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, explained that the court dismissed the electronic abuse charge, stating that it did not have jurisdiction to determine that particular offence.

However, the court found her guilty on the charge of offensive conduct and imposed a one-year custodial sentence.

According to the lawyer, the defence pleaded with the court for a lighter punishment, but the court maintained that the increasing spread of such offences required a deterrent sentence to discourage others from engaging in similar acts.

The case has sparked discussions on responsible use of social media, misinformation, and the legal consequences of publishing unverified claims online.

Before the sentencing, the court had earlier ordered a pregnancy test for Camilla Alhassan during proceedings.
