Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress administration of reintroducing the controversial electronic transaction levy through indirect charges on mobile money transactions.

Addressing a press conference in Parliament, Mr Afenyo-Markin claimed the government was being hypocritical after strongly opposing the former New Patriotic Party government’s E-Levy policy while in opposition.

According to him, the current administration initially won public approval after scrapping the E-Levy upon assuming office in 2025, but has now introduced new deductions on mobile wallet-to-bank transfers and other electronic transactions.

He further criticised the government over the introduction of what he described as the “Dumsor Levy” under the Energy Sector Reform Levy, which imposes an additional GH¢1 charge on every litre of fuel purchased.

The Minority Leader called on Cassiel Ato Forson to appear before Parliament on Thursday to explain the new deductions affecting mobile money users and wallet-to-bank transfers.

Mr Afenyo-Markin argued that the government was acting contrary to its campaign promises and accused the administration of saying one thing while doing another.

He described the government as one driven by propaganda and double standards regarding taxation and electronic transaction policies.
