The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Eric Opoku, has revealed that the government will need approximately GH¢500 million to address the current oversupply of farm produce, commonly known as a food glut.

Speaking in an interview on Monday, November 10, 2025, Mr. Opoku emphasised the need for a coordinated, data-driven strategy to manage the surplus and warned that failure to act could discourage farmers from reinvesting in agriculture.

“You cannot just start buying produce without assessing the quantities and working with your technical team to determine what is needed. Based on the figures we have, about GH¢500 million will be required to manage the glut,” he said.

The Minister also disclosed that discussions are ongoing with the World Food Programme and other development partners to explore strategies for managing the glut and preventing future occurrences.

“If we handle this properly, it will encourage farmers to reinvest in agriculture because it becomes profitable. But if we allow these foods to go to waste, it will be a major loss and demotivate investment in farming,” Mr. Opoku added.

This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to stabilise food prices, protect farmers’ livelihoods, and ensure sustainable agricultural production across the country.
