Ghana Police to Deploy 80 Officers per Electoral Area for Ayawaso East By-Election
Heavy security deployment and community sensitisation underway to ensure peaceful and credible March 3 Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election
- About 80 police officers will be deployed to each electoral area to protect voters, candidates, and election officials
- Officers will be stationed at all polling centres to maintain law and order and ensure residents vote freely without intimidation
- Police cautioned that anyone involved in violence, provocation, or spreading false information will face legal consequences
At a stakeholders’ forum and community engagement held ahead of the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, ASP Asong Ayrakwa, Nima District Police Commander, announced that the Ghana Police Service will assign about 80 officers to each electoral area to protect voters, candidates, and election officials.
The move forms part of extensive preparations to guarantee a peaceful and transparent election scheduled for March 3, 2026. Police personnel will be stationed at all polling stations to maintain order and ensure residents can exercise their voting rights without fear or intimidation.
ASP Ayrakwa explained that officers will also interact with residents across the constituency, educating them on the importance of maintaining calm before, during, and after the polls. He emphasised that the constituency has an opportunity to demonstrate its commitment to peace to the entire country.
He warned against acts of violence, provocation, and verbal abuse, stressing that elections should focus on ideas and choices rather than conflict. He also urged young people not to allow themselves to be influenced into causing unrest and encouraged them to respect the law.
The Police Commander cautioned that anyone who violates electoral regulations, engages in violence, or spreads false information will face legal consequences.
Community leaders expressed support for the security measures and commended the Police for engaging residents. They encouraged citizens to remain united, act responsibly, and verify information before sharing it to avoid misinformation that could heighten tensions.
The planned deployment of roughly 80 officers per electoral area, combined with ongoing public education, is expected to help ensure a calm, orderly, and credible Ayawaso East by-election.
