DVLA to Go Fully Digital with Sticker-Based ‘Drive from Port’ Numbers Starting August 1
The new system will be implemented at key ports

- The DVLA is collaborating with the State Insurance Company (SIC)
- The DVLA expressed confidence that this innovation will help streamline vehicle processing at ports
- The introduction of the sticker-only DP numbers reflects the DVLA’s vision
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has announced that, beginning August 1, 2025, it will cease issuing aluminium ‘Drive from Port’ (DP) number plates at all ports of entry across the country.
In place of the physical plates, the DVLA will now issue digital DP stickers only, as part of its full transition to a digitized vehicle registration system. The new system will be implemented at key ports, including Tema and Takoradi, where the initiative has already undergone successful pilot testing.
According to the DVLA, the shift forms part of its broader commitment to modernize operations, enhance security, and improve service efficiency for both vehicle importers and the general public.
Insurance Integration for Added Security
To further strengthen the system, the DVLA is collaborating with the State Insurance Company (SIC) to ensure that every vehicle issued a DP sticker is automatically covered by insurance before exiting the port.
“This move is aimed at making DVLA services more secure and efficient for our clients,” the Authority stated in a release, encouraging the public to embrace the change and work closely with DVLA and SIC to ensure a smooth implementation.
Part of a Broader Digital Reform Agenda
The DVLA expressed confidence that this innovation will help streamline vehicle processing at ports, eliminate bottlenecks, and support the Authority’s larger digitisation strategy.
The introduction of the sticker-only DP numbers reflects the DVLA’s vision of leveraging technology to enhance convenience, reduce fraud, and align with global best practices in transport administration.
