Ablekuma North Turns Green: Ewurabena Aubynn Wins Rerun, Ends NPP’s Reign
Victory ends decades of NPP dominance in the constituency

- Ewurabena Aubynn wins Ablekuma North rerun with 34,090 votes
- NDC claims seat for the first time in the Fourth Republic
- Victory follows months of legal disputes and electoral controversy
In a dramatic political upset, Ewurabena Aubynn of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has captured the Ablekuma North parliamentary seat in a fiercely contested rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.
This unprecedented victory marks the first time in Ghana’s Fourth Republic that the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP)-dominated constituency has fallen to the ruling NDC, signaling a potential political shift in the Greater Accra Region.
The rerun, conducted in 19 polling stations, concluded months of legal wrangling and electoral confusion following the inconclusive general election of December 7, 2024. That original race had ended in controversy due to irregularities and missing endorsements on pink sheets, prompting the Electoral Commission (EC) to withhold a final declaration.
After Friday’s decisive vote, Aubynn secured 34,090 votes, narrowly defeating NPP’s Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie, who polled 33,881 votes.
A Tense Journey to the Polls
Following December’s disputed results, both major parties claimed victory, with the NPP alleging a 414-vote win. However, the absence of verified results from 19 polling stations cast doubt over the outcome. A High Court ruling in January 2025 ordered the EC to complete collation, but fresh procedural irregularities forced a rerun.
Initially, the NPP vowed to boycott the rerun, condemning it as unjust. Yet, in a surprising move, Nana Akua Afriyie broke ranks with her party and rejoined the race, drawing quiet support from grassroots members and select party stalwarts.
Campaign Heat and Election Day Clashes
Campaigning was intense, with the NDC deploying high-level officials to rally behind Aubynn, who resonated with youth and undecided voters as a fresh, accountable voice.
Election day was not without turmoil. At least one polling station experienced violent disruption, during which Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson were reportedly assaulted. A police officer was later interdicted after video footage showed him attacking a journalist. Still, voting proceeded and concluded relatively smoothly across most locations.
A Game-Changing Win
By nightfall, it was clear: Ewurabena Aubynn had pulled off a major upset, flipping a seat long considered an NPP stronghold.
Political analysts say a mix of NPP infighting, confusion over the party’s participation, and election-day unrest may have eroded their support. The result signals a growing vulnerability for the NPP in Greater Accra, where once-safe constituencies are becoming battlegrounds.
What’s Next?
Aubynn’s victory not only enhances the NDC’s position in Parliament but also boosts their momentum heading into the 2028 general elections. The EC is expected to officially declare and gazette the results in the coming days, ending nearly eight months of electoral uncertainty in Ablekuma North.
Her win may mark the beginning of a new chapter in the constituency’s political narrative — one where the winds of change are blowing stronger than ever.
