George Afriyie Fumes Over GFA Term Limit Proposal, Vows Government Petition
Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie has declared his intent to petition the government should a proposal to extend the GFA presidential term limit from two to three terms be passed at the upcoming Congress in Prampram.

- George Afriyie opposes GFA proposal to extend presidential term limit from two to three.
- He plans to petition the government if the amendment is approved at the August 12 Congress.
- Afriyie argues the proposal undermines GFA’s democratic principles and is ill-timed.
Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie has pledged to formally petition the government if a controversial proposal to extend the Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) presidential term limit is passed at the upcoming Ordinary Congress.
The proposed amendment, which would allow a GFA president to serve three terms instead of two, is set for debate during the association’s 31st Ordinary Congress on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre in Prampram.
Afriyie, who also led the Black Stars Management Committee, expressed his opposition in an interview, calling the proposal poorly timed and a threat to the democratic values of the GFA.
“I will personally petition the government of Ghana over this proposed presidential term limit. I believe that we don’t need it at this time,” he asserted.
Should the proposal pass, current GFA President Kurt Okraku, who started his second term in 2023, would become eligible to run again in 2027 for a potential third term.
