Former Electoral Commission Chairperson, Charlotte Osei, has stated that the late President John Evans Atta Mills would be appalled by the environmental devastation caused by illegal mining and the toxic nature of Ghana’s current political climate.

Speaking at the 13th Anniversary Commemorative Lecture held in his honour on Tuesday, July 22, Ms. Osei noted that the current state of the nation starkly contrasts the values Mills championed—integrity, peace, and national unity.

“I often wonder how Prof would feel about our current path. I believe he’d be outraged by how we are allowing galamsey to destroy our land and future,” she said.

She praised Mills as a man of humility and vision, calling on all Ghanaians to uphold his legacy through unity, responsible leadership, and sustainable development.

Despite her concerns, Charlotte Osei highlighted that some developments would have made Mills proud—including the resilience of his family, the rise of his former students into national leadership roles, and the milestone of Ghana having its first female Vice President.
