President John Dramani Mahama has urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to treat their roles as a solemn public duty, not as a personal benefit or political favor.
Speaking at an orientation and training session in Accra on Wednesday, June 18, Mahama reminded the newly appointed officials that their selection came after rigorous consideration among numerous capable candidates.
He emphasized that such appointments require humility, a strong sense of responsibility, and unwavering accountability.
“This isn’t a personal reward—it’s a public responsibility,” he stated, referring to their selection under Section 21 of the Local Governance Act.
Highlighting the pivotal role of local governance in driving national development, Mahama called on MMDCEs to operate with transparency, inclusiveness, and a long-term vision for sustainable growth.
He noted that Ghanaians voted for transformative change and that the officials’ performance must reflect that mandate.
He also stressed the need for prudent and transparent use of development resources allocated to local authorities.
These remarks are part of a broader effort to realign local government leadership with Mahama’s “resetting agenda,” focusing on effective decentralisation and national renewal.
