Gianluca Prestianni has been handed a six-match ban by UEFA after being found guilty of homophobic conduct during a Champions League knockout play-off match against Real Madrid in February.
The match at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon was briefly halted for around 10 minutes after Real Madrid forward Vinícius Júnior reported alleged offensive remarks from Prestianni. The Argentine winger initially denied making racist comments, claiming there had been a misunderstanding.
However, Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni later stated that Prestianni admitted the comment directed at Vinícius Júnior was homophobic rather than racial.
UEFA’s disciplinary panel subsequently ruled on the case, issuing a six-game suspension. Prestianni will serve two additional matches after already serving a provisional ban, while the remaining three games have been suspended for two years pending good behaviour.
The decision adds to ongoing scrutiny of player conduct in European competitions, with governing bodies reinforcing stricter sanctions against discriminatory behaviour on and off the pitch.
