NPP flagbearer accuses government of intimidation and says alleged abuses of power will not go unpunished.

- Bawumia accuses government of intimidating NPP members through arrests and detentions.
- He cites cases involving a social media commentator and a regional party chairman.
- He warns state officials of future accountability over alleged abuses of power.
The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (New Patriotic Party), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised what he describes as growing intimidation and harassment of party members by the governing National Democratic Congress administration.
In a statement issued in Accra on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, Dr Bawumia alleged that the arrests and detention of opposition figures amount to an “endless assault” on the rights of NPP members since the NDC assumed office on January 7, 2025.
He argued that recent actions by state authorities, including arrests and what he termed harsh bail conditions, threaten Ghana’s democratic freedoms and undermine free speech.
Dr Bawumia cited the detention of social media commentator David Essandoh, who had complained online about power outages, as well as the arrest of NPP Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe Abronye, as examples of what he believes is politically motivated targeting.
He further alleged that there is an “unholy collaboration” between elements of the executive, investigative agencies, and sections of the judiciary aimed at silencing opposition voices.
According to him, such actions weaken Ghana’s democratic progress and must be condemned in the strongest terms.
The NPP flagbearer also warned that individuals involved in alleged abuses of state power would be held accountable in the future.
“I therefore serve notice to officers of the State… that the day of accountability will come,” he stated.
He urged party supporters to remain resilient and continue engaging in lawful political activity despite what he described as intimidation, stressing that democracy must be protected through peaceful and democratic means.
