A 32-year-old enrolled nurse, Nafisa Adama, has died in a tragic road accident while transporting medical supplies from Gwollu to Kusali in the Sissala West District.

She was stationed at the Kusali CHPS Compound and was reportedly returning to her community after collecting essential drugs and medical logistics from the district capital, Gwollu, which is about 15 kilometres away.

According to the Sissala West District Health Information Officer, Rauf Bawa Basugu, the incident occurred around 16:00 GMT on Tuesday, May 12, while she was riding a motorbike.

He explained that adverse weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rainfall, developed during her journey, contributing to a collision with a motor tricycle coming from the opposite direction.

The tricycle rider is said to have lost control while navigating the harsh weather and crashed into the nurse, who was carrying medical supplies meant for the Kusali community.

She sustained severe injuries and was rushed for emergency care but was pronounced dead about an hour later.

Officials said Ghana Health Service expressed deep sorrow over her death, noting the risks health workers in rural areas often face while delivering essential services.

Mr Basugu also revealed that the deceased was a mother of two who had gotten married just two weeks before the incident.

Madam Adama had been posted to Gwollu in 2023 and later transferred to Kusali, where she served as the only health professional in the community.

Her death has left the Kusali area without a resident health worker, pending a replacement posting.

Health authorities further noted that the Sissala West District has already experienced a shortage of personnel, with dozens of health workers leaving the area this year while only a fraction have been replaced, worsening the strain on healthcare delivery.
