Mainoo Contract Talks Progressing Positively, Says Carrick
Carrick confident as Manchester United close in on new long-term deal for Kobbie Mainoo

- Michael Carrick confirms contract talks with Kobbie Mainoo are progressing positively toward a long-term deal.
- Mainoo’s future looked uncertain earlier in the season but has improved since Carrick’s arrival.
- Manchester United are pushing for Champions League qualification after a strong run of form.
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has expressed confidence that midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is close to signing a new long-term contract with the club.
Mainoo is currently in discussions over a deal expected to run until 2031, which would also see a significant improvement on the terms of his existing contract signed in 2023, when he was just breaking into the first team.
“It’s getting closer, so we’re positive,” Carrick said. “Time will tell, but we’re in a good place at the moment.”
A Turnaround in Fortunes
The development marks a major shift from earlier in the season, when Mainoo’s future at Old Trafford appeared uncertain. At the time of Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United in January, the young midfielder had yet to start a Premier League game under then-manager Ruben Amorim.
Mainoo, who was sidelined with a calf injury at the time, had also been exploring opportunities elsewhere, including a proposed loan move to Napoli, which was ultimately rejected.
However, Amorim’s tenure ended abruptly following that match, paving the way for Carrick’s arrival and a renewed role for Mainoo in the squad.
Carrick’s Perspective
Carrick recalled watching that Leeds match while on holiday with Wayne Rooney, unaware of the changes about to unfold.
“There was no sign of what was coming,” he said. “Football changes quickly—you have to stay focused on the present and keep improving.”
Since taking charge, Carrick has overseen a strong run of form, winning seven of his first 10 matches and guiding Manchester United into third place in the table.
Eyes on Champions League Return
United are now in a strong position to secure qualification for the UEFA Champions League, needing just a few more positive results from their remaining fixtures.
While many believe failing to qualify would be a disappointment, Carrick remains measured in his approach.
“As a club, we want to be competing at the top, but there are steps to take,” he explained. “We have to recognise how far we’ve come and keep building.”
He emphasized the importance of returning to Europe’s elite competition, citing both financial benefits and its appeal to players.
“The Champions League brings so many positives. It’s where we want to be, and we need to get used to being there more often.”
With contract talks progressing and the team in strong form, Manchester United appear to be building momentum both on and off the pitch as they push toward a successful finish to the season.
