A psychiatrist at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, Dr. Pearl Adu Nyarko, has called on Ghanaians to prioritise their mental health and seek professional help when faced with emotional or psychological challenges.

She made the call during a free health screening exercise organised on Friday, May 15, 2026, at the forecourt of the Asafo Palace in Kumasi. The exercise was organised through a collaboration between Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, the National Health Insurance Authority and the Asafo Palace.

The initiative was led by Akyeamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu, who doubles as Asafohene and Otumfuo’s Akwamuhene, with the aim of bringing healthcare services closer to residents of Asafo.

As part of the exercise, residents were screened for blood pressure, blood sugar levels and mental health conditions, while officials from the National Health Insurance Authority also assisted residents in registering, renewing and replacing their health insurance cards.

Speaking to the media, Dr. Pearl Adu Nyarko said many people tend to overlook their mental wellbeing while paying attention only to their physical health. She stressed that mental health is just as important and encouraged the public to seek early treatment when they experience signs of stress, anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns.

She further urged families and communities to support people battling mental health challenges instead of stigmatising them. According to her, early intervention can help improve recovery outcomes.

Speaking on the reason behind the initiative, Akyeamfuo Asafo Boakye Agyemang Bonsu said the health of his people remains a top priority, adding that the screening exercise was meant to help residents know their health status and access healthcare services at no cost.

He noted that including mental health screening was intentional, as many people suffer in silence without seeking help. He expressed appreciation to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and the National Health Insurance Authority for supporting the initiative.

Residents who benefited from the exercise commended the organisers for bringing healthcare services directly to their doorstep.
