Black Stars captain Jordan Ayew has rejected suggestions that his long-standing place in Ghana’s national team is due to family connections, insisting that his performances on the pitch have justified his selection over the years.
The 34-year-old forward, who has represented Ghana for more than 16 years, acknowledged that he has often faced criticism from sections of the Ghanaian football community. However, he maintains that success in football is determined by performance rather than reputation or family background.

Speaking about recurring claims that his inclusion in the national team has been influenced by his father, football legend Abedi Pele, Jordan said such assertions overlook the pressure and scrutiny that come with being part of a famous football family.
“When people say that, it makes me laugh because for me it’s even harder,” he said.
According to the Black Stars skipper, being the son of one of Africa’s most celebrated footballers often raises expectations and creates perceptions that players must constantly work to overcome.
“You always have that perception that it’s because of his father or because of his uncle. But at the end of the day, football doesn’t lie on the grass,” he stated.
Jordan stressed that while criticism is part of the game, professional players must remain focused, maintain confidence, and continue working hard regardless of public opinion.
He encouraged young footballers to develop resilience and mental toughness, noting that football can be challenging both on and off the field.
“We are allowed to be criticised, but you need to keep your head straight, believe in yourself and continue doing what you do best. Football is not easy, and you need thick skin to deal with difficult moments,” he added.
Jordan Ayew is expected to captain Ghana at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be hosted jointly by United States, Canada and Mexico.
As one of the most experienced players in the squad, Ayew is expected to play a key leadership role as Ghana seeks to make a strong impression on football’s biggest stage.
