Newly appointed Carlos Queiroz has declared that he is determined to restore winning standards at the Ghana national football team, insisting that his focus will be on immediate results rather than long-term experimentation.

Speaking at his unveiling, the experienced Portuguese coach struck a confident tone, stressing that his appointment comes with a clear mandate to rebuild the team’s competitive strength.

“I am a winning coach,” he said, adding that he understands the pressure that comes with leading one of Africa’s most decorated national teams.

Queiroz takes over at a crucial time for Ghana, who are looking to regain stability after a series of inconsistent performances. The Black Stars are currently in transition, with fans hoping for a return to strong form in both continental and global competitions.

The 73-year-old replaces Otto Addo after his dismissal following defeats to Austria and Germany, and has signed a short-term contract focused on guiding Ghana through qualification and preparation for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Describing the role as one of the most significant of his career, Queiroz highlighted his personal connection to Africa, noting his Mozambican upbringing.

“To be part of Ghana’s football family is a privilege and an honour,” he said. “I have strong African roots. I was born and raised in Mozambique, so leading Ghana to the World Cup will be unforgettable.”

He is expected to prioritise tactical discipline, defensive structure, and balance—hallmarks of his coaching philosophy across previous national team roles. Early reports suggest he will assess the squad thoroughly before finalising plans for upcoming matches.

Ghana will step up preparations with friendly matches against Mexico and Wales as Queiroz tests his system ahead of the tournament.

The Black Stars will feature at their fifth World Cup and have been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team. Their campaign begins on June 17 against Panama, followed by fixtures against England and Croatia.

After early exits in 2014 and 2022, expectations are high for a stronger showing this time, with Queiroz tasked with leading Ghana beyond the group stage.
