An 11-year-old boy in Canada has died from rabies after waking to find a bat on his face while staying with his family at a cottage in Ontario in 2024, according to a case report published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.

The report said the boy brushed the bat off his nose and mouth, after which his father captured the animal in a container and released it outside. Because the child had no visible bite marks or scratches and the bat did not appear to behave unusually, his family did not immediately seek medical attention.

About 19 days later, the boy developed numbness and swelling on his face. As his condition worsened, he was taken to several healthcare facilities where doctors initially suspected illnesses including Bell’s palsy and viral infections, leading to treatment that did not address rabies.

His health deteriorated rapidly, and he later developed a high fever, difficulty swallowing, confusion, and hallucinations. He was eventually admitted to a paediatric intensive care unit, but died from rabies despite medical efforts.

Health experts say the case highlights the importance of seeking immediate medical advice after any direct contact with bats, even when there are no visible bite marks, as rabies is almost always fatal once symptoms develop but can be prevented with prompt post-exposure treatment.
