An Accra Circuit Court has remanded two men into custody over alleged unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
The suspects, Musah Aguruba, a carpenter, and Issah Awuni, a farmer—both from Bawkzua—pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiring to possess a G3 assault rifle and live ammunition without legal authorization.
According to the prosecution, led by Deputy Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Nyamekye, the complainants are military personnel deployed to the Bawku Municipality for peace enforcement duties.
The court heard that the two men were arrested following a shooting incident on April 27, 2026, when unidentified gunmen allegedly fired indiscriminately, causing panic in the area. Security personnel responded to the scene, and the suspects reportedly attempted to flee upon seeing them.
They were later apprehended at a mosque in Bawkzua. A subsequent search conducted in their presence led to the discovery of a G3 assault rifle, two magazines loaded with 20 rounds each, and 176 rounds of AK-47 ammunition.
During investigations, the accused denied ownership of the weapons, stating they had gone to the mosque to pray and suggesting that an unknown individual may have hidden the firearms there.
The prosecution indicated that investigations are ongoing to verify their claims. The court has ordered that the two remain in custody and reappear on May 14, 2026.
