The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), led by Mayor Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, popularly known as King Zuba, has disclosed that the ongoing demolition exercise at the Asafo enclave is intended to reclaim and secure land for future railway development.

During previous demolition exercises in parts of Kumasi, King Zuba explained that the exercise formed part of efforts to prevent the area from being used as a hideout for criminals, drug users, and prostitutes.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Lawson News on Friday at the Asafo Interchange, behind the COCOBOD Building, Mayor Boadi said the demolition of about 500 structures is aimed at reclaiming and securing the railway lands for future railway development projects.

The exercise was carried out with the support of a joint team of police and military personnel.

The Mayor disclosed that some individuals living beneath the interchange had presented him with permit letters purportedly issued by the Ghana Railway authorities, claiming they had been authorised to occupy the area.

He, however, said the Assembly would engage the relevant railway authorities to verify the authenticity of the permits and ensure that the appropriate measures are taken.

According to him, the demolition exercise is also intended to prepare the area for the government’s planned railway redevelopment initiative under President John Dramani Mahama.
