The Government of Ghana has begun the repatriation of 327 Ghanaian nationals who were left stranded in Côte d’Ivoire following a demolition exercise carried out by authorities in the Port Bouët Municipality of Abidjan.

In a statement issued on Thursday, June 12, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the demolition operation destroyed homes and sources of livelihood belonging to the affected Ghanaians, leaving them displaced and unable to support themselves.

According to the Ministry, 228 of the stranded nationals were successfully repatriated and arrived safely in Ghana on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Arrangements have also been finalized for the remaining 99 individuals to return on Friday, June 12.

The repatriation exercise forms part of the government’s efforts to provide immediate assistance to citizens affected by the situation and ensure their safe return and reintegration into society.

The Ministry explained that all 327 individuals had been residing in communities impacted by the demolition exercise. Following the destruction, many lost their means of livelihood and lacked the financial resources to secure alternative accommodation in Côte d’Ivoire.

Beyond facilitating their return, the Government of Ghana is also pursuing compensation for those affected. The Ministry revealed that Ivorian authorities have expressed their willingness to compensate victims of the demolition exercise.

“The Ministry further wishes to acknowledge that Ivorian authorities have expressed their desire to compensate the victims of their demolition exercise and shall therefore remain actively engaged on the matter to ensure that the promised compensation is received by our affected nationals,” the statement noted.

The Ministry added that Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Abidjan will continue to coordinate efforts with relevant stakeholders and engage Ivorian authorities to ensure the compensation process is completed and that the welfare of the affected Ghanaians remains a priority.

The Government of Ghana has pledged to remain in close contact with its counterparts in Côte d’Ivoire to ensure that all promised support and compensation are delivered to the affected citizens.
