National Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says the June 4 Revolution remains an important historical event that continues to offer valuable lessons for today’s youth, particularly on governance, accountability, and the dangers of military interventions in politics.
Speaking on the Ghana Se Sen Morning Show on Lawson TV/Radio with Kwame Tanko, Asiedu Nketia explained that this year’s June 4th commemoration will be held at Banda, as part of the annual tradition of reflecting on the causes and impact of the 1979 uprising.
He noted that the gathering serves as a platform to educate younger generations about the circumstances that led to the revolution and to ensure that such events are not repeated in Ghana’s political history.
According to him, while the revolution brought important lessons, issues such as corruption and bribery remain human behavioural challenges that persist across societies.

He further stressed that Ghana’s democratic system has demonstrated that military coups are not a solution to bad governance.
“Nobody has an appetite for coup d’état because we have seen that military takeovers are not the solution to bad governance,” he said.
Asiedu Nketia added that democracy provides more effective mechanisms for addressing governance challenges through constitutional means, civic participation, and institutional checks.
He strongly opposed suggestions that the June 4 commemoration should be stopped, arguing that such a move would amount to rewriting Ghana’s history.
“We cannot ban the June 4 celebration because doing so would mean rewriting the history of this nation,” he stated, emphasizing the need to preserve historical memory for future generations.

He further described June as a significant month in the history of the NDC, noting that several important party activities and milestones are associated with the period.
The NDC Chairman reaffirmed that the party will continue to mark the anniversary annually as part of its commitment to historical education, democratic reflection, and national development.
