Argentina star Lionel Messi sparked an injury scare after requesting a substitution during Inter Miami CF’s Major League Soccer match against the Philadelphia Union on Sunday.
The 38-year-old forward came off in the 73rd minute after appearing to clutch the back of his left leg, though he was later seen walking normally as he headed down the tunnel.

Inter Miami head coach Guillermo Hoyos suggested the substitution was largely precautionary, pointing to difficult pitch conditions in a wet Miami.
“As far as I know, we don’t have a [medical] report on that yet, but he really was fatigued,” Hoyos said after the match.
“He was tired; the pitch was heavy and when in doubt, the standard approach is always to ensure you don’t take any risks.”
Messi, the highest-paid player in Major League Soccer, has not confirmed whether he will feature at the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup, though he is widely expected to make a record-equalling sixth appearance.
The tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with Argentina’s squad set to be announced next week ahead of their opening match against Algeria on June 16.
Since joining Miami in 2023, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner has managed his playing time carefully and has occasionally been sidelined by minor hamstring issues.
