A violent clash at an illegal mining site in Asawinso in the Western North Region has left one person dead and several others injured, with police arresting a key suspect connected to the incident.

The Municipal Chief Executive for Bibiani, Sebastian Obeng, said the confrontation erupted after traditional authorities and security personnel attempted to stop illegal mining activities, commonly known as galamsey, in the area.

Mr Obeng explained that the Asawinso chief led an intervention at the site following reports of ongoing illegal mining operations.

According to him, police officers were deployed after authorities were alerted about the situation.

“Illegal miners have been a thorn in our flesh,” he said.

Mr Obeng alleged that a man identified as Obidi, who is reportedly linked to the mining site, contacted other individuals after learning about the chief’s intervention.

He claimed the situation escalated when armed men arrived at the scene and began firing indiscriminately.

The MCE said two individuals identified as Afoko and Baako Bewu had been named as leaders of the group that stormed the area.

The violence resulted in the death of one person, while about seven others sustained injuries. Several people also fled the area during the shooting.

Mr Obeng further disclosed that Obidi was later arrested after he reportedly appeared at a police station carrying a firearm and attempted to report what he described as a robbery attack at the mining site.

According to the MCE, the suspect allegedly did not realise the police were already aware of the earlier shooting incident, leading to his arrest.

Police investigations into the incident are ongoing.
