The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported a troubling increase in road traffic fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, with 130 lives lost between January and March.
Data released by the Service shows it responded to 211 road accidents during the period, a sharp rise compared to the 144 incidents recorded within the same timeframe in 2025.
The increase in crashes has been matched by a significant spike in casualties. In the first quarter of 2025, the 144 accidents resulted in 86 deaths and 500 injuries. However, in 2026, the higher number of accidents led to 130 deaths and 932 injuries, almost doubling the number of injured victims.
The figures point to a growing road safety crisis, with both the frequency of accidents and the severity of their impact rising within just a year.
Although the GNFS has not yet outlined the exact causes behind the surge, the data highlights the urgent need for stronger enforcement of traffic regulations, improved driver discipline, and increased public awareness to help reverse the trend.
