- Arsenal lead the table but face a decisive clash against City at the Etihad Stadium.
- Rooney advises Arsenal to adopt a disciplined, defensive approach and rely on counter-attacks.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney believes Manchester City have a mental edge over Arsenal as the Premier League title race intensifies.
League leaders Arsenal currently sit six points ahead, although they have played one game more, and are set to face City at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday in what many are calling a potential title decider.
Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Rooney pointed to City’s experience and leadership under manager Pep Guardiola as key factors that could give them the upper hand.
“City know how to win the title, and they have a manager who knows how to do it,” Rooney said.
He explained that City’s players are more likely to remain composed under pressure compared to their Arsenal counterparts, especially during crucial stages of the season.
Rooney also noted that a dip in form can negatively affect a team’s confidence, making it harder to secure results.
“When you lose a few games, you start wondering where the next goal or win will come from, and that mindset can impact performances,” he added.
City boosted their momentum with a commanding 3-0 victory over Chelsea, capitalizing on Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth.
According to Rooney, the outcome of Sunday’s clash could determine the direction of the title race, with the winner likely becoming favourites to lift the trophy.
He suggested that Arsenal may need to adopt a more pragmatic approach, focusing on defensive discipline and counter-attacking football.
“They must stay compact, avoid leaving gaps, and look to hit City on the break,” he advised.
Rooney concluded that regardless of playing style, Arsenal must remain resilient and do everything possible to prevent City from gaining the upper hand in the race for the Premier League title.
