The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association is set to meet urgently today, April 7, 2026, with the selection of a new Black Stars head coach expected to dominate discussions.
The meeting comes after the dismissal of the 50-year-old coach following Ghana’s consecutive defeats to the Austria national football team and the Germany national football team during last month’s international friendlies.
Those results deepened concerns about the team’s readiness and direction ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
With the tournament in North America fast approaching, pressure has intensified on the GFA to quickly stabilise the Black Stars’ technical leadership.
Several experienced coaches, including Carlos Queiroz, Paulo Bento, and Fernando Santos, are reportedly being considered for the role. Today’s meeting is expected to help narrow down the options.
After the session, the GFA is expected to consult government stakeholders before making a final announcement.
The Association has indicated a preference for a coach with strong international or elite club experience.
Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, has hinted that the appointment could be finalised by Monday, April 13.
He told said in an interview: “If we don’t announce the coach by this weekend, then by Monday at the latest we should be able to present the new Black Stars coach.”
Once appointed, preparations are expected to resume in May with a friendly against the Mexico national football team, followed by another warm-up match against the Wales national football team on June 2.
Ghana will be making its fifth FIFA World Cup appearance in North America, having been drawn in Group L alongside the Panama national football team, the England national football team, and the Croatia national football team.
